Adams Mill

In the early 1900's, many married women dedicated their lives to raising children and maintaining their homes. Men invented machines to help their wives, freeing them from the multitude of household chores. The Upton brothers founded their company in 1911 and began producing the motor-driven wringer machine. Sitting idle after decades of use, an early wringer machine can be found in the third floor of the Adams Mill, near Cutler, Indiana. Although the washer was electric, the wringer had to be manually operated. The mill not only produced flour and meal, but served the community as a store, school, and a post office.
