Continuity of Life, H8914

Near Cannon Beach, Oregon, is the beautiful Ecola State Park. As we drove through the winding road of the old-growth rainforest, we came upon this phenomenon called a Nurse Stump. The now dead tree provides a platform for new trees (probably Sitka Spruce or Western Hemlock) to establish. As the old tree decomposes, it delivers important nutrients and a pathway for the new roots in the volcanic rock found below, thus helping with the continuity of the life of the forest.
