“Burnside Bridge”
Antietam National Battlefield
Sharpsburg, Maryland
2014
Peaceful waters reflect the sturdy limestone arches of Burnside Bridge, located southeast of Sharpsburg, Maryland. Built in 1836 as a crossing of Antietam Creek, the bridge witnessed the daunting task of a Union attack on the Confederate infantry and artillery in 1862. A sycamore tree provides a respite just as it did for battle-weary soldiers over 150 years ago.
