The Piney River Trail, north of Vail, sits in the White River National Forest. An 11-mile forest service road leads to the trailhead at Piney Lake. The hike along Piney River provided views of beaver dams and snow-covered peaks. Colorado’s aspens were glowing in brilliant yellows. The mountains were ablaze with color that contrasted with the deep greens of the pines and spruces. The valley meadow contributed with its vibrant reds. We smelled the clean pine scent of the woods and felt the intensity of the sun as we ascended to an area with huge boulders to rest and enjoy the vista.
