A Walk in the Woods

A winding road in the old-growth rainforest of Oregon’s Ecola State Park leads to a natural phenomenon called a nurse stump. As the old tree decomposes, it provides nutrients for the continuity of life in the forest. Nurse logs are special - they are nature's "Giving Tree" that Shel Silverstein writes of in the book of the same name.
